Who am I?
by Jeff Hunter
After working at a custom automotive shop in Los Angeles for a number of years I realized I wasn’t cut for the mechanic trade. I decided it was time for a sea change. So, in spite of my limited sailing experience and a predisposition to seasickness, I hung up my coveralls and climbed aboard a 32-foot sailboat that would take me on an transformative odyssey half way across the globe.
From a remote tropic harbor I joined a small crew of seafaring nomads on a sturdy gaff-rigged cutter named Thanks Mardell. Without a clue of what I was getting myself into, I trimmed the mainsail and made for the trades. On this heading lay over six-thousand nautical miles of open ocean, two hemispheres, several remote coral atolls and a lifetime’s worth of mostly true sea stories.
On a midnight watch – somewhere in a tempestuous north Pacific, heading towards a few geographically-isolated volcanic rocks – I realized that I was running from the truth. I couldn’t go back to fixing cars. So I jumped ship and signed up for a few classes at a local art school. There I discovered that my talent for putting things together extended beyond classic cars, custom trim packages and convertible tops; to connecting strategies to concepts, art to copy and form to content. And after meeting a few inspirational individuals – including my future wife – I figured out what my next big adventure was going to be.
Years later I have my ship with all her flags a’ flying. I’m now a seasoned advertising creative and have been recognized for my work on several national campaigns. During my years at CP+B (2009-2016) I’ve had the opportunity to continue exploring my craft while working with and learning from some of the most talented and respected creative minds in the industry. And when the winds began to change, I set off on my next great creative venture and started a successful freelance business.
UPDATE: Nowadays, I’m fully involved in yet another excellent adventure; fatherhood. Over the past ten years, my wife and I have taken on a full crew; ourselves, two boys and a very large dog.
Carry on,
Jeff Hunter
